Athletically, Carey Rockland was a competitive swimmer for 10 years. Having grown up in Washington, D.C., she trained with Curl Burke Swim Team, training team for several Olympians and World Record holders. She had the opportunity to see the focus and intensity requisite for achievement on that level. She benefited from early lessons in mental toughness garnered from sharing a pool with those athletes. As an adult Carey began marital arts training in 2004 at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu where she discovered a deep appreciation for the movement mechanics of the human body, and the full athleticism required for participation.
